Abstract

Background: Improper waste disposal poses serious environmental challenges in urban areas, particularly near protected ecosystems. At Tapak Jedah, Bengkulu City, household and industrial waste accumulation threatens the TWA Pantai Panjang-Pulau Baai protected forest, primarily due to inadequate waste collection infrastructure and limited public environmental awareness.

Research Gap: Existing waste management practices have not adequately addressed the environmental consequences of uncontrolled dumping near protected forest areas, particularly regarding pollution pathways, community behavior, and the effectiveness of local waste management regulations.

Novelty: This study provides an integrated assessment of environmental degradation, community waste disposal practices, and regulatory challenges associated with illegal dumping adjacent to a protected coastal forest ecosystem.

Methods: A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through direct field observations and in-depth interviews with local residents and waste pickers. Data were analyzed descriptively to identify waste accumulation patterns, environmental impacts, and community responses.

Results: The findings revealed extensive accumulation of mixed organic and inorganic waste in roadside ravines, contributing to river pollution, leachate generation, unpleasant odors, and potential disease transmission. Despite official prohibition signs, illegal dumping continued. Informal recycling activities provided limited waste recovery but remained insufficient to control increasing waste accumulation.

Conclusion: Uncontrolled dumping at Tapak Jedah threatens environmental quality, public health, and protected forest sustainability. Improving municipal waste collection, enforcing Local Regulation No. 2/2011, and implementing community-based waste segregation, composting, and recycling initiatives are essential for sustainable waste management.
