The Influence of Critical Thinking on the Understanding of Mathematics Concepts in Grade VII of MTs Al-Husna

Abstract

Background: Understanding mathematical concepts is essential for mastering advanced topics, yet many students still struggle. Critical thinking is believed to significantly support conceptual understanding. This study aims to determine the influence of critical thinking on the mathematical concept understanding of seventh-grade students at MTs Al-Husna.

Method: A survey method with a quantitative correlational approach was used. The population consisted of 70 students, and a sample of 60 students was selected using the Slovin formula. Data were collected through essay tests validated for reliability and analyzed using simple correlation and regression.

Results: The correlation coefficient was 0.261, indicating a low relationship. However, a t-test confirmed a significant influence of critical thinking on mathematical concept understanding (t-count = 2.059 > t-table = 2.000). The coefficient of determination showed that critical thinking contributed 6.812%, while the remaining 93.2% was influenced by other factors such as motivation and intelligence.

Conclusion: Critical thinking has a positive and significant effect on mathematical concept understanding, although its contribution is relatively small. Educators should consider developing students' critical thinking skills as part of learning strategies to enhance mathematical concept understanding.
